Cat Emergency Care
Emergency is a four-letter word in the cat parent world. Though we would prefer to avoid them at all costs, the fact of the matter is, emergencies can and do happen to our feline friends. Fortunately, the veterinarians at Pet ER 24-7 are here for you with 24 hr and extended-hour availability to help you through all forms of cat emergencies.

What Types of Cat Emergency Services Are Provided at Pet ER ?
The goal of any cat emergency hospital is to provide care for sudden or urgent feline medical needs, often when other veterinary clinics are either closed or can’t fit you in. Providing these essential services is something that Pet ER veterinarians take very seriously. Those services include:
Minor Outpatient Emergencies
Though cats tend to be less accident-prone than dogs, they can still get in their fair share of trouble, which may require a cat emergency hospital visit for things that don’t require hospitalization and that aren’t life-threatening. These would be things like mild digestive or respiratory illnesses, abscesses, or minor lacerations.
Major Emergencies
When a cat is experiencing something a little more severe than a minor cut, we’re here to give them the more intensive care that they need. Illnesses or injuries that require hospitalization for continued treatment or monitoring or that may need surgery include respiratory distress, a urinary blockage, intoxication, or severe dehydration.
Imaging
Imaging is essential in cat emergency care, helping diagnose, monitor, and treat many conditions. X-rays are ideal for bones, fractures, and foreign objects; ultrasounds provide detailed views of soft tissues and organs; CT scans offer advanced insights into the brain, spine, and internal organs; and endoscopy allows direct internal examination and treatment of the digestive, urinary, and respiratory systems.
Trauma Care
Broken bones, excessive bleeding, or severe swelling require immediate emergency care. Traumas like these may require short- or long-term supportive treatment or surgery.
Non-Trauma Surgeries
A cat may come to us for surgery for a number of reasons, often because of eating something that won’t pass through the digestive tract, a urinary stone that’s causing trouble, or a difficult birthing that requires a cesarean section.
Neurocritical Care
The nervous system is a special sort of animal, and when things go wrong with it, immediate treatment is necessary. Seizures, spinal cord injuries, or paralysis can be diagnosed and treated at Pet ER.
What to Expect When Visiting Our Emergency Cat Hospital
Since every cat emergency is unique and different, we can’t provide a detailed road map of how diagnosis and treatment will go, but we can give you an idea of what to expect. Once you walk through the Pet ER door, you’ll be met with a staff member who will triage your cat’s emergency to make sure more urgent issues get seen immediately. Less severe emergencies will be seen as soon as possible.
Severe emergencies that need stabilization will get it, then a complete history will be taken and an exam performed. The information gathered here will be used to determine the next steps. While our vets and staff will do most of the work, we’ll need you to be able to answer questions such as when the issue showed up, possible causes, if it’s gotten worse, and if you’ve tried any other treatments. Be ready to provide details about any concurrent health issues your cat may have, what food they’re eating, what their environment is like, etc.
From there, diagnostics and treatments will take over. For some cats, this may mean a same-day, in-and-out visit; for others, it may mean staying overnight for continued treatment. We will discuss the plan with you as well as the estimated costs and time frame.
