Emergency Care
The word emergency often elicits a bit of panic when we hear it, even in us veterinarians. That’s because an emergency means a pet is experiencing an illness or injury that needs immediate care. Emergencies are a normal part of the dog parent gig. Fortunately, if you have one, the veterinarians at Pet ER 24-7 are here for you, providing 24-hour and extended-hour coverage for all your dog's emergency needs.

What Types of Dog Emergency Services Are Provided at Pet ER 24-7?
Every emergency dog hospital is different, but the basics of service are the same. We aim to provide stabilization, diagnostics, and treatment for dogs with sudden or severe illnesses or injuries. For those of you in the Long Island area, Pet ER veterinarians can help you with a long
list of services, including:
Minor Outpatient Emergencies
We likely all think of stitches as the classic minor emergency room visit, well same goes for dogs. These are the emergencies that don’t require hospitalization and are non-life-threatening, so things as minor lacerations and mild vomiting/diarrhea.
Major Emergencies
If only all emergencies could be minor. Unfortunately, some dogs may experience more severe illnesses or injuries that require hospitalization in order to provide critical or continued supportive care, potentially even surgery. These are things such as respiratory distress, intoxication, heat stroke, or severe dehydration.
Imaging
Imaging plays a key role in emergency diagnosis. Radiographs are ideal for spotting fractures, foreign objects, and some organ diseases, while ultrasounds provide detail on soft tissues like the heart, lungs, and abdominal organs. CT scans offer a deeper look at the brain, spine, and internal structures, and endoscopy gives direct views inside the gastrointestinal, urinary, and respiratory systems.
Trauma Care
Rather than minor lacerations, more severe traumas, such as fractures or excessive bleeding, may require surgery and further supportive care.
Non-Trauma Surgeries
Because dogs tend to eat things that they shouldn’t, foreign object removal is a common surgery performed by emergency dog hospitals. Other non-trauma surgeries may include urinary stone removal, GDV surgery, pyometra surgery, or splenectomy.
Neurocritical Care
Seizures, spinal cord injuries, or paralysis all require immediate and thorough treatment.
What to Expect When Visiting Our Emergency Dog Hospital
If your dog is experiencing an emergency, the last thing you want to do is have to wait for veterinary care. That’s why our emergency dog hospital will provide triage care to quickly evaluate the urgency of your dog’s issues in order to get prompt treatment for those that need it. More severe issues will get treated first, while less severe problems will be seen as soon as possible.
A staff member will perform a complete exam to gather preliminary information that we vets will use to determine the next step. If a dog’s condition is severe, they will be stabilized as much as possible before continuing the exam and diagnosis.
Look to answer questions regarding your dog’s history, including when the issue showed up, if it’s gotten worse, possible causes, and any initial treatments you may have given.
We may also want to know everyday things such as what your dog is eating, how much exercise they get, and any other health conditions they have had in the past. This information may be collected during the initial assessment or while stabilization care is being performed.
From there, we will discuss the plan of action, including diagnostics we would like to perform, the potential treatments your dog may receive, and the costs involved.
